If you're planting more than one bulb in the same area, space them 30 centimetres apart. Cover one-third of the bulb with soil and enrich the soil with a good quality fertiliser. Once the shoots start growing, you can add liquid fertiliser every two to three weeks but be sure to wet the soil well to prevent root burn.

Once planted in full sun, hippies will take about 5-6 weeks to flower. If you want to delay flowering, plant in a shady spot. After flowering is finished (usually within 2-3 weeks), cut stems close to the bulb, leaving the leaves intact. Lift bulbs in April-May, cut leaves close to bulbs, and store in a warm, dry place.
